Iran issued this evening (Saturday) official results in the presidential election: Hassan Rohani, 64, and the most moderate reformist candidate, surprised everyone and won by a huge gap the candidate who came after him.

After the counting of votes Rohani won 50.71% of the vote which are 18.6 million ballots. After him came Tehran Mayor Mohammad Klibaf, who received 16.55% - 6 million votes. Third place settled Chairman Negotiator with the West, Saad Jalili, who received 11.35%, or 4 million votes.

Total participation in elections was more than 36 million Iranians. Voting percentages were estimated to be approximately 70%.

Rohani is considered pronounced in the moderate group of candidates, and the past decade was the representative of Supreme Leader Khamenei and the National Security Council in the nuclear talks with the West. Throughout the process of counting the votes, he led a very big gap on his rivals, but his victory after only one round came as a huge surprise and a blow to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

During his election campaign Rohani promised that if elected, Iran will have more freedom of expression and less political oppression. Iranian officials, including Rohani, insist that Iran only seeks nuclear reactors for energy and medicine.

"We will not allow what was in the last eight years," said Rohani to his supporters last week. "They brought the sanctions on the country. However, they are proud of it. I want a policy of reconciliation and peace, and to be reconciled with the world."
Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei congratulated the votes cast in the state, and tweeted on Twitter: "voting in elections, no matter which candidate is a vote for the Islamic Republic and a vote of confidence in the government."

Israel responded to the election results in Iran: Iran elected a new president from a list of candidates approved by Ayatollah Khamenei, after he disqualified candidates which did not fit the radical worldview. The Iranian nuclear program was set up today by Khamenei and the president of Iran. Even after the election, Iran will be judged by its actions on the nuclear and terrorism. Iran must respect the demands of the international community to stop the nuclear program and stop it spreading terror throughout the world.
