Disappointment in Shuvu Banim: Rabbi Berland will not come to Uman

Tens of thousands of people have been preparing for the trip to the grave of Rabbi Nachman in Uman, Ukraine, Rosh Hashanah. But Rabbi Eliezer Berland, the Shuvu Banim leader will not come to the Zion this year.

Rabbi Berland was one of the trailblazers in the tomb of Rabbi Nachman, even in the days before the fall of the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union. And this year will be the first time that he does not pray at the site on Rosh Hashanah - since those days.

In recent months, Rabbi Berland found refuge in Marrakech in Morocco after fleeing from Israel due to the ongoing police investigation on suspicion of criminal acts.

According to the Rabbi's associates he will not come to Ukraine for fear of arrest warrant issued against him by the Israel Police Interpol police. Ukraine has an extradition treaty with Israel, so it is likely that he will be arrested and extradited, should he appear at the gates.

"Rabbi Berland told us," says one of his followers, "travel to Uman, as instructed by Rabbi Nachman, and not come to Morocco. Yet many will persist and will head to Marrakech to stay with him this year."
