Horror on way from Uman: "I woke up at gunpoint"

A haredi businessman was robbed on his way from Uman: Matisyahu Swerdlof, a businessman from Boro Park, was robbed at gunpoint but managed to catch the robber.

The incident occurred this Monday when Mattisyahu and his friend hired a taxi driver's services from Uman to the Kiev airport with a stop at Mezibuzh.

His friend decided to stay at Mezibuz, and Matisyahu went to Kiev. On his way he fell asleep and woke up in front of an aimed gun, "The first thing I saw," he says, "was a gun pointed at my head with the taxi driver demanding of me to empty my pockets and transfer my iPhone to him. I obeyed him since I could not imagine the thought of my wife remaining a widow. The only thing I wanted was to survive this story. I began to plan an escape route, and indeed as the taxi slowed down I jumped out and ran.

"I looked around and realized that I was close to the airport in Kiev. I rushed to the airport and was looking for an English-speaking officer. I told him about the robbery and that the iPhone has an app that allows detection position. I offered the officer $ 500 if he would help me regain my things.

"We rushed to the computer and found the location of the taxi driver. The police chased him and caught him with my stuff and my iPhone. But then I found out that the police does not allow me to leave Kiev until the court case, and in addition the police confiscated my money and suitcase and claimed that they needed it for court. That was already too much for me, I called the American ambassador and the activist Zvi Gluck, and after lobbying I was allowed to leave Kiev, but without my money and belongings, only after further lobbying I was allowed yesterday (Tuesday) to leave with my belongings," concludes Matisyahu.
