A person tried to sell a Torah scroll for 1000 shekels, and was suspected by the buyer who complained to police. As a result the man was captured and today (Sunday) he was taken for a remand hearing at the Magistrates Court in Rishon Lezion.

The story began two weeks ago, when a resident of Rishon Lezion filed a complaint with the police after a man tried to sell him a Sefer Torah for 1000 shekels. The buyer agreed to pay the seller only 200 shekels, and promised him that he will donate to the synagogue another 300 shekels. The seller agreed and gave him the Sefer Torah.

The buyer, who suspected the seller was a thief, was able to film him, and came with a picture to the police station, where he was identified immediately by detectives. At the same time, efforts were made to locate the place where the book was stolen from – a synagogue inside a yeshiva building on Margolin Street, Yad Eliyahu - Tel Aviv. The Sefer Torah is estimated at a value of more than 140,000 shekels.

The suspect, who was born in 1974, was arrested by the police station detectives and brought for an initial investigation, after which he was arrested and imprisoned. This morning he was brought to a remand hearing at the Magistrates Court in the city.

Last week the Rav of the Yeshiva, gabbai of the synagogue, the business owner who returned the Sefer Torah and the representative of the family who donated the book were invited to the police station, were they were received by the district commander, Brigadier General Yehuda Ben Atar, and at a moving event the stolen Sefer Torah was given over to Rabbi Zvi Lau, son of the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv.
