Baruch Dayan Haemes: In the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn Rabbi Yerachmiel Binyamin Halevi Klein z"l, secretary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, of blessed memory, passed away at the age of 79.
In recent days, he came to pray at the 770 tent and in the morning (Friday) died at his home after not wakiung up from his sleep, to the sorrow of his family and followers of Chabad.
Born in Jerusalem to his father, Rabbi Menachem Halevi Klein, head of the Chevra Kadisha in Jerusalem, and his mother Rachel a"h, who died at his birth and therefore he was named Benjamin – as the name of Binyamin whose mother Rachel died in childbirth.
During his youth he studied at Yeshivat Torat Emet Chabad in Jerusalem and at Yeshivat Tomchei Temimim at 770 and in Melbourne Australia.
He later married into the Shusterman family. After his marriage he began working at the Secretariat with the Rebbe and began serving as assistant secretary-of Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Isaac Chodakov.
Over the years he began to mediate between the Rebbe's secretaries and political figures, and political security in Israel. Over the years, he worked on behalf of the Rebbe, with the Shin Bet and the Mossad in Israel.
During the Rebbe's meeting with the late Prime Minister Menachem Begin, the Rebbe spoke about him "Mein general" – he is my general.
