One killed and three seriously injured on Route 1; Tallis and tefillin found in vehicle



This morning (Sunday) shortly before 9:00 am a fatal road accident occurred on Highway 1 near Latrun interchange in the direction of Tel Aviv - a man of 21 from Rehovot was killed, two were seriously injured and one medium. Reporting from the scene indicates that tzitzis and tefillin were found in the vehicle.

The injured were evacuated by a mobile Intensive Care Unit to the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Karem. Among the wounded are one in serious condition, a young 20-year old suffering from multi system injury, sedated and on a respirator, one moderately wounded - a young man of about 20 with head and limb injuries, and one wounded in a very difficult and unstable condition – a young 25 year old, unconscious on a respirator, with a head injury.

Preliminary investigation of the circumstances of the accident indicates that it was a private car at the edge of the road, Highway 1 towards Tel Aviv before Latrun. A truck which arrived from Jerusalem hit the vehicle, killing one person and wounding two, all occupants of the vehicle.

Shlomo Dvir, Ichud Hatzalah volunteer said: "When I arrived at the scene I encountered a difficult scene of a vehicle crushed from behind by a truck, a passanger in the back died on the spot, the driver and his two passengers were seriously and moderately injured. Together with other volunteers of the motorcycle unit of Ichud Hatzalah we provided primary health care to victims rescued from the vehicle by fire teams and taken to hospital. Heavy traffic is now recorded in the area due to the nature of the accident".

Paramedic of MDA Ofir Shayish who treated the wounded on the scene said: "This accident is very difficult, when we arrived we saw a car crushed badly at the back, in the back seat was captured a man of about 30, he was unconscious, not breathing, no pulse and suffered from an extremely difficult multi-system injury. Once extracted, we had to pronounce him dead on the spot.

"People who witnessed the accident rescued three wounded whom we found lying outside the vehicle, two of whom are now unconscious, suffering from complex multi system injury, and another casualty who is conscious and suffering also from multi-system injury. After stabilizing their condition we evacuated them urgently to the hospital."

Ari Miller, ZAKA volunteer from Beit Shemesh, said "This is a very serious accident, the truck collided with the rear of the vehicle, the rear seat passenger was critically injured and a doctor confirmed his death. Scenes were very harsh, ZAKA team and a fire team rescued the victim". He added, "This is a very busy road especially in the morning. It is not known why the vehicle was standing on the roadside. ZAKA team of Beit Shemesh treated the gathering of findings from the scene of the accident".
