Storm in plenary of Jerusalem Municipality: secularists attacked Barkat with calls of "traitor"

A heated discussion took place this evening (Thursday) in the Jerusalem City Council, against the background of the desecration of Shabbat.

Secular protesters, including a number of business owners, stormed into the plenary hall of the City Council and provoked a riot.

These called out at Mayor Nir Barkat "traitor". They were removed by security guards.

Supermarket owners and demonstrators are protesting against the ruling of secular Mayor Nir Barkat, to close the opening of business on Shabbat and for city inspectors to fine business owners.

The outbreak in the plenum was at the end of a demonstration initiated by 'Hitorerut' movement at the Safra Square to protest Barkat's decision to close eight supermarkets in downtown Jerusalem, as the initial step to enforce the bylaw.

Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan, a resident of Jerusalem said in response to the demonstration on the subject of Shabbat: "I support mayor Barkat's outline to maintain Shabbat and the balance between the needs of all sectors of the public in Jerusalem.

"Shabbat is a holy and fundamental value of the Jewish people, 'Echad Ha'am' eloquently expressed the importance of Shabbat, saying:" More than Israel kept the Sabbath, Shabbat has guarded them."
