New York Mayor Bill de Blasio expressed dissatisfaction because of the destruction of the menorah placed in the yard of the official residence, for the second time.

"When we witness acts stemming from prejudice and hatred," he said, "We must respond and we cannot just roll over and ignore.

"The true measure of a society and of a government is whether we support our residents who belong to a people who for centuries preserved its tradition and fought a war of survival, or we turn a blind eye and look away, their war of survival is our war of survival, our participation today with the lighting of Chanukah candles, is our response to vandalism, and our statement is that we are united in this city, Jews and Gentiles, and we support the Jewish community in this city," said the mayor.

Rabbi Ben Zion Krasnianski, Rabbi of the local Chabad community says: "This menorah has been there for eight years. Every year we light Chanukah candles in public, this year the menorah has been vandalized twice, once during Shabbos, and the second time on Sunday evening after the lighting ceremony.

Alex Goldstein, who lives nearby, said he was shocked when he saw the menorah collapsed and some of its stems were broken.

The Hate Crimes Department of the NYPD had already opened an investigation, the working assumption is that the same person vandalized the menorah twice, unfortunately there were no security cameras in the area to document the destruction of the menorah.
