Britain's Rabbi is for Islamic Studies: Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Chief Rabbi of Britain does not rule out Islamic Studies in Jewish schools.

"This is an opportunity to learn about a religion that is completely incomprehensible and unknown," said a spokesman for the Rabbi to a local newspaper the "Jewish Chronicle".

The comments were made in light of a newly approved law according to which each school must integrate into its curriculum the learning of two religions.

The Rabbi's spokesman added, "Now more than ever, it is important that our children will have a better understanding of Islam so we can build better relations with the Muslim residents of the UK. It is important that Jewish schools take advantage of the new law and learn about Islam, a religion that has become mentioned often, but few People know its essence".

The new law will come into force already this September, and will require all Jewish schools to teach another religion, besides Judaism.

The Jewish community is still studying the issue and examining whether the new law would only apply to official Jewish schools, or even private schools - Hadorim and haredi schools for girls.

In the UK, there are 37 national Jewish schools operating, attended by more than 15,000 Jewish students, these schools are recognized by the Ministry of Education and enjoy budgeting, and in return undertake to be subject to the curriculum of the Ministry of Education, and regular audits by the educational authorities.
