Iranian anger due to the execution of a Shi'ite cleric in Saudi Arabia: rioters broke into the Saudi embassy in Tehran and Consulate in Mashhad.

The Shiite Sheikh Nimar al-Nimar was executed in Saudi Arabia and across the Middle East there were demonstrations against Saudi Arabia.

Demonstrators threw firebombs at the Saudi Embassy in Tehran, after breaking into it, destroyed it and lowered the Saudi flag. Security forces evacuated rioters from the building. So too there was a violent demonstration in front of the Saudi Consulate.

Other demonstrations took place in the province al-Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia, where many Shiites live, and the birthplace of al-Nimar.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that "Saudi Arabia will pay for executing al-Nimar. The killing is part of a Zionist conspiracy aimed at deepening divisions among Muslims."

Saudi Arabia summoned the Iranian ambassador for a reprimand and gave him a letter of protest about the declarations of the Iranian government about the execution.

The Saudi authorities have stated that Iran is responsible to protect its embassy in Tehran.

The US government also referred to the execution of the Shiite cleric.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said that this could aggravate ethnic tensions and called on the leaders of Middle Eastern countries to act to reduce tensions. Kirby added: "We urge Saudi Arabia to respect and protect human rights and to ensure a fair legal procedure."
