Hours after the terrorist attack in Marseille, France, Binyamin Amsalem recalls the moments of the attack; "He came up behind me, attacked me with a big knife and stabbed as they do in Israel".
He said the perpetrator "was strong". However, "I struggled with him but I fell. He attacked again, and then fled for fear that those around us will catch him."
Amsalem was stabbed at 9:00 am (local time), while he was on his way to the Sores school, where he is a teacher.
He was attacked from behind in his shoulder and arm with a machete (large and wide knife, E.S.) with a blade at the length of 20 cm, and Amsalem defended himself by using a Sefer that was in his hand.
"A gentile who saw the scene chased the young perpetrator for several minutes, caught him and called for help."
Amsalem who was taken to hospital in mild condition said: "I'm really weak, I'm trying to relax. I was miraculously saved, I thank Hashem".
To the question of whether the neighborhood has known cases of anti-Semitism in the past, he said "This is a quiet neighborhood, I never dreamed it would come here. There are more dangerous places."
His wife, who is next to him, said, "He is still traumatized, shaking and scared. He is currently undergoing X-rays in the hospital to check that he has no gut and chest injury, further testing will be done at a neurological clinic to make sure everything is in order". She adds: "I hope he will come out of it quickly, and get back to his strength."
Benjamin Amsalem (34), is a member of the Haredi community in Marseilles. He was stabbed today while on his way to the school 'Source' in the 9th district of Marseille, where he is a teacher.
Marseille Prosecutor Rais Robin told a news conference that the attacker is a 16-year-old Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin, supporting the terrorist organization ISIS.
"He said he did so in the name of Allah, the Islamic state, he repeated several times, saying that he acted on behalf of ISIS".
After his arrest, the boy began to rage and said that if he left the police station, "he will bring a gun and kill cops." A search was conducted today at his home near the scene of the attack, his family told police they noticed he had become extreme following the watching of videos online.
Zvi Amar, president of the Jewish community in Marseille, told Behadrey Haredim that despite the suspicion that the perpetrator is mentally unstable, "We will make every effort to ensure that he remains in custody and will stand trial."
After a meeting with the hostages who were in the Hyper Kosher store, the Chief Rabbi of France, Rabbi Chaim Corsia spoke and wished speedy recovery to Benjamin Amsalem.
