Yerushalayim Rabanim Protest the Planned Charedi Cultural Center
Rabanim and Roshei Yeshiva in Yerushalyaim protest the idea of opening a cultural center for the charedi community: “It is with great apprehension that we hear that a ‘cultural’ center is being planned for the chareidi public in Jerusalem for the first time… The concept of charedi actresses is an additional downfall and very serious since as such non-Jewish culture is entering the Jewish home and destroying the foundation of Israel, chas veshalom.”

Great Torah leaders and community rabbis in Jerusalem have signed a letter protesting a plan by the Jerusalem Municipality to open a “Cultural Center” for the charedi public.
It had been publicized that the Municipality was planning a charedi cultural center, the first of its kind, in the Schneller compound in Jerusalem. The plan includes cinema screening halls, art galleries and studios for charedi artists
Activists obtained signatures of the Jerusalem rabbis: Rav Moshe Zadka, rosh yeshivah of Porat Yosef, Rav Zion Boaron, Rav Reuven Elbaz, rosh yeshivah of Ohr Hachaim and member of the Council of Torah Sages, Rav Yaacov Chaim Sofer, rosh yeshiva Kaf Hachaim and other rabbis protesting the plan.
The letter states, “It is with great apprehension that we hear that a ‘cultural’ center is being planned for the chareidi public in Jerusalem for the first time. The plan includes cinema screening halls, a gallery, studios and infrastructure to train artists and more. The plan is to become an academic art school in collaboration with secular artists.
“We hereby express the Torah viewpoint that this represents a great breach and this will not be done in the Jewish people: to import the culture of entertainment and recreation; to open a place designed for this purpose is terrible destruction and devastation – to let Greek culture penetrate our camp by setting up theaters and circuses, and who knows what this will lead to, even if everyone involved is charedi.
“Let us also note the new phenomenon of charedi actresses and producers who are creating new movies, something our forefathers never dreamed about. Besides the mere act of watching movies, even those who claim to be censored or even those produced by charedim, even those who claim ‘recommended by women educators’ have been prohibited by all the Torah leaders and it is well known that many pure souls have fallen into the depths, Hashem yirachem, and this started by watching movies.
