Who will Degel Run with

While the division with Agudah intensifies, the possibility of a union between Degel and Shas first reported by Bechadrey heats up. We present here for the first time a photo documentary of a meeting between Chairman of Degel Hatorah Moshe Gafni and his chief colleague MK Uri Maklev, where it was said: At this time we will not say a word against Shas under any circumstances. The reason: the option of running on a joint ticket and disbandment of United Torah Judaism.

“We’re not saying a word against Shas; we might run for the Knesset with them.” Last Sunday Chairman of Degel Hatorah Moshe Gafni related to the possibility that Degel will run with Shas in the coming election in the wake of tension between Degel and Agudas Yisrael, especially concerning assignment of positions and representatives within United Torah Judaism.

Gafni says that, “At this time we will not say a word against Shas under any circumstances. I don’t know with whom we will go to the elections to the Knesset. It sounds like a hasty election. I just spoke with Uri Maklev, not with the representatives in the Municipality.

Maklev is continuing the party line developed at the Degel Hatorah conference at Chafetz Chaim, wherein public criticism was expressed against the division of roles within United Torah Judaism between Degel Hatorah and Agudas Yisrael. Degel Hatorah demanded a census of party members to ascertain the relative strength of each party.
In addition, in an interview granted by Gafni to Mishpacha’s political analyst Shimon Breitkop, he said that, “My feeling is that our partnership with Agudas Yisrael has come to an end. There is a younger generation in Degel Hatorah that is unwilling to continue this distorted, unequal partnership. Until now, we have always given in, because of our responsibility to the public. But today, we know that we were not always understood.

“There are a variety of political options on the agenda. It’s no secret that our relations with Shas are better than ever, but there are a lot of possibilities. This is not the time to talk about them. But clearly the situation will not stay the same.”
