Oren Lieberman, a Jerusalem based CNN news correspondent has presented in depth coverage of Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport in advance in advance of next month's conference hosting representatives from 40 different countries who will come to Israel to discuss airport security.
Airport security concerns are mounting worldwide in the aftermath of the Brussels bombings and the crashing of MetroJet Flight 9268, and EgyptAir Flight 804.
As one of the world's safest airports Ben Gurion serves as a model of airport security for international airports around the world.
" No flight leaving the airport has ever been hijacked, and there has not been a terrorist attack at the airport since 1972, when three members of the Japanese Red Army killed 26 people and wounded dozens more in a shooting rampage."
Ben Gurion has layers of security many of which are invisible to the 16 million passengers passing through the airport every year. Security begins in the operations center with monitors every flight in Israeli airspace. Every single flight, crew member and passenger is checked well long before getting on the plane.
Not all of the security measure used at Ben Gurion can be applied to larger airports, but aviation security expert Shalom Dolev said," some fundamental principles and some best practices can be deployed in other parts of the world."
In the past both Israel and America been criticized for racial profiling, but Dolev says that the Israeli tactics are risk based and do not constitute racial profiling.
When asked what makes Israel different than other countries Dolev answered, "We are more flexible, more dynamic to respond to emerging threats and respond effectively."
