Francis Kalifat has been unanimously elected to succeed Roger Cukierman as president of the CRIF. CRIF is the main representative political body of French Jews similar to the role played by Britain's board of Deputies of British Jews. The CRIF presidential election is held every three years.

Kalifat was born in Algeria and is the first Jew of Sephardic decent to become president of CRIF since it was established in 1944.

His presidency comes during a time of record emigration of Jews from France which has been influenced by the outbreak of anti-Semitic violence. Since 2012 12 Jews have been murdered by French Islamists. Almost 8,000 French Jews made aliyah last year. For the past two years France has been the largest provider of new olim to Israel.

After being elected president of CRIF Francis Kalifat said, " “The fight against anti-Semitism is our main cause because French Jews are in the most difficult situation they have experience since World War II. I think all of our force needs to be united to fight against this anti-Semitism in all its forms, because we see this new anti-Semitism advancing under the guise of anti-Zionism.”
