Minimum Wage in Israel Increased To 5,000 NIS
Employees around Israel are rejoicing as minimum wage goes up to 5,000 Nis a month, while employers are less enthusiastic about the new law

As part of a coalition agreement between SHAS and the current government, the minimum wage has officially gone up to 5,000 nis a month. An additional increase of another 300 Nis is on the way, and will go into effect in December, putting the minimum salary at 5,300 Nis.
As previously reported, the Knesset has already approved the law two years ago, without any opposition. The law’s second reading in the Knesset passed with 30 for and no MK abstaining or voting against it, while the third reading passed with 33 for- without any opposition.
The law calls for the minimum wage to be increased gradually; at its first stage to 4,300 Nis, and today-Jan,1 to be pushed up by an additional 700 Nis to 5,000 Nis. In December, the law will reach its final stage, with the minimum wage rising yet again, by an additional 300 nis, and will stand at 5,300 Nis.
MK Aryeh Deri expressed great satisfaction today, saying “it’s very moving, and I am saying Shehecheyanu vekimanu…. Shas promised throughout the elections to higher the minimum wage so that all workers, even those working at minimum wage, can support themselves honorably”.
MK Deri Added that “The poor are not so poor anymore, public transportation is a lot cheaper than it used to be, thanks to SHAS. We are working in many different areas, especially with lower income families. Very soon water prices will be lowered to accommodate lower income families.”
Showing his strong commitment, MK Deri added “SHAS, which I am leading, will not rest until the revolution is complete”
MK Deri deserves credit for the latest hike in wages after stubbornly fighting for it, even having his picture taken while holding a poster that read “30 Nis minimum per hour”.
