IDF handicapped from Bareket ignited himself – badly injured

Since Moshe Silman, who died of his wounds two days ago, set himself afire a week ago in the social protest demonstration in Tel Aviv, there were a few attempts at self ignition which did not succeed, among others at the 'Orange' branch in Petah Tikva and at the Be'er Sheva municipality.

This morning (Sunday) an IDF disabled man from Bareket set himself afire in Altelef street in Yahud.

The ignition was at a shopping center in the industrial zone at the Yahud-Monson intersection next to road no. 461. The igniter is 45 year old Akiva Maf''i, resident of Bareket, who was wounded in the IDF and is confined to a wheelchair, who set himself afire at a bus stop. He was evacuated to the Shiba hospital in Tel Hashomer with his condition defined as harsh, with severe injuries of burns level C on 80% of his body, under anesthesia and respiration.

The fire department informed that passers-by tried to put out the fire with water and a fire extinguisher.

An eye witness who was present told the "Galei Zahal" radio station: "I saw a man lying on the floor, the man was burned and scorched. I arrived at the stage after they put out the fire from him. They poured water on him. People stopped their cars and poured water over him".

According to the witness, the event took place at a bus stop. "I saw a wheel chair which belonged to this man, to my opinion. It didn't seem that this is a normative person. There were quite a few who gathered around him. People tried to help, but in such a condition it was hard. His clothes were burned, and he shouted in pain, squirmed on the floor".

The MDA executive manager, Eli Binn, said that 80% of the casualty's body was covered with burns level C, and he was evacuated under anesthesia and respiration in a very harsh condition to the Tel Hashomer hospital.

Moshe Sa'adon, a Ichud Hatzola paramedic who arrived on the scene, told Behadrei Hareidim: "When I reached the scene I saw the man lying next to a wheelchair after he had ignited himself with fuel. We gave him first aid after the fire forces had extinguished the fire which burned in his body. The background to the event is not sure, but it is possible that he did so with a financial background".

Earlier on today, a fire team managed to take control over a fire which broke out in an apartment on K"kl street in Kiryat Bialik, after the owner of the apartment locked herself in and set it afire. The teams broke into the place and rescued the woman, and she was transferred for treatment in hospital – after being slightly injured by inhaling smoke.
