Anti-American violence broke out in Cairo too, which brought the White House to announce that "Egypt is not an ally", followed by a statement of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to clarify America's position. As the violence continues, American officials are beginning to hold back previous promises to Egypt, including foregoing a $1 billion debt and transfer of funds, which is supposed to send a clear message to Cairo that anti-American threats will not be tolerated.

The Washington Post quotes officials in the USA who explain that aid to Egypt has been on hold, while the situation is monitored. It further adds that this move is only temporary, but may lead to the reevaluation of American assistance to Egypt.
The Egyptian debt to the USA is $3 billion, in addition to an annual assistance of $1.5.
