"Feeling the pulse" is the definition of the Eida Hareidis of Devorah Leah Cohen's arrest, a Chabbad woman who was released at the end of last week from imprisonment at a military jail after spending 24 days in it for defection from the IDF.

In announcements which were hung around Meah Shearim and other areas, it said: "For a few weeks a hareidi woman has been imprisoned for not showing up to postpone her military service, for this transgression she was arrested and her arrest was prolonged.

"This is not an arrest of a certain single woman who is unknown to the public, but a feeling of the hareidi public's pulse, wherever it is, to see how it will react to such deeds, whether it will protest against this outrage.

This check – as certain factors have already admitted, is a perseverance test for the hareidi public against the trends of the authorities to integrate the hareidi public into the secular melting pot, to push in the army and Civil Service by force into the lines of the hareidi Jewry.

"If we keep quiet now, what shall we say tomorrow… It is our obligation now to shake off our indifference and to cry out…"

From information which reached Behadrey Haredim, it seems that behind the writing and dissemination of the announcements stand seniors in the Eida Hareidis. But the open question which was left is- why did they only remember to cry out in protest now – after the woman was released – and not when she was in prison?
