Panacea against stroke: Tomatoes

Tomatoes may prevent strokes in the brain, researchers from Finland who studied the effect of lycopene, a chemical found in tomatoes, peppers and melons, determined.
As reported in the BBC, researchers conducted a study of 103 men, and followed them for 12 years.

Subjects were divided into four groups according to the level of lycopene in their blood. Results of the study indicated that men whose blood has the most lycopene had the smallest chance of stroke.

According to the data, there was a 55% decrease in risk of stroke among those who were careful with a lycopene rich diet.

Dr. Johnny Carpi, one of the researchers explained that the study adds to existing evidence of the importance of eating fruits and vegetables that prevent disease. "Results reinforce the recommendation to eat at least five servings of fruit or vegetables a day, and it would certainly reduce stroke rates in the world."
