Remaining in Yeshiva: 13.8% of the recruitment rotation were rejected

The rate of yeshiva students who received deferment from the army on grounds of "Torato Umanuto" this year jumped to 13.8% of all male conscripts per year. It represents an increase of 0.8% over the preceding three years, when the rate of draft deferrals were stopped at 13%, reports the Haaretz newspaper.
According to the report, the IDF expect an additional increase in draft deferrers in 2013, and it appears that the increase will continue in the coming years.
According to the data provided by the IDF in response to Haaretz, this is an all time record. In comparison, in 2005 the proportion receiving deferment on grounds of "Torato Umanuto" stood at 8.4%, in 2008 at 10.9% and from 2009 to 2011 about 13%.
The army explains the increase due to increasing birthrate among the ultra-Orthodox in the '90s.
A jump by 1% per recruitment year, means a further 500 young people who do not serve per year - a figure equivalent to the loss of a regular battalion each year.
According to data provided by the Ministry of Defense this year to the Research and Information Center Committee, the proportion receiving an exemption or deferment in 2011 is about 25.1% of the men - 13% accept rejection as part of "Torato Umanuto" and 12.1% for other reasons, which include the release for health reasons and mental issues.
Given the rate of Haredi students in 1st grade at the beginning of this decade – the future army model views that early in the next decade, about 20% of young men in Israel who should be recruited, will be deferred from military service because of their yeshiva studies.
