Innocent Muslims: death penalty for 8 involved in the production

A court in Cairo sentenced today a death penalty on eight Christian civilians who were involved in producing the film 'innocent Muslims' which circulated on the Internet last September. The film mocks Islamic prophet Muhammad. The eight were charged in their absence.

The film sparked violent riots across the Muslim world, which lasted several weeks, during which; among other things U.S. embassies in Islamic countries were attacked. More than 50 people were killed and hundreds were injured in these riots.

Judge Saif al - Nasser Suleiman told the court: "The defendants were convicted of insulting the Muslim faith in their participation in the production and distribution of a film that hit Islam and its prophet."

Among those convicted in Egypt, is also included American - Egyptian producer Necula Bassali Necula, currently serving a sentence in jail in Los Angeles, for breach of conditions.
