Head in clouds • F-16 engines disappeared from IDF base

A serious security default occurred recently: the Air Force found that a number of F-16 combat aircraft engines were stolen from an army base in central Israel, as reported in Walla News.

According to senior officials in the Air Force, the gang which stole the engines was helped by a factor from within the base, due to the fact that there were no holes found in the fence, and hence it is probable that its members went through the gate, as well as the fact that for the purpose of transporting the engine and removing them from the base, the use of a large vehicle was required, and therefore it is not likely that the thieves went in and out by foot.

With the learning of the theft, the base commander rushed to the police investigation unit. According to estimates, the thieves used a civilian employee within the base, or a soldier serving in it.

Air Force officials said that the incident was severe and unprecedented in the air force. It is not clear who is behind the operation, and what the purpose of the theft of the engines is, however, among others the suspicion that these are metal thieves is being examined.

The IDF spokesman said in response: "Military Police investigation was opened whose conclusions will be brought before the military prosecution." So far no suspects have been arrested in the case.
