Police and rescue forces were called yesterday afternoon to the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, where an elderly religious man was attacked with bleach spray which was sprayed into his eyes.
The attack occurred on Rowling Street in Williamsburg, when Nachum Rosenberg - owner of 'blog' and ' Nayes line' who sanctified war of indecent acts occurring in the haredi community - was on his way home. A Satmar chasid came before him and sprayed his face with bleach.
Rosenberg's eyes were injured and he called the police. Although Rosenberg identified the attacker, the police have yet to arrest the man. A gentile shop owner who witnessed the incident told police about the attack. Rosenberg was rushed to hospital with severe eye injury.
New York media reported the incident in detail. The Daily News newspaper interviewed Rosenberg, who claimed that the attack came in response to his cooperation with the authorities on Nechemia Weberman's case, which was convicted on Monday this week, and may serve a long sentence.
Rosenberg also told the media that he is a 'red flag' in his community, and that his life is always in danger.
Nechemia Weberman, a 54 year old Satmar chasid, and resident of Brooklyn, was convicted of 59 counts of indecent assault. His sentence, to be given in a few weeks - could reach at least 25 years in prison.
Associates and leaders of Satmar are sure that this is a plot. Weberman, treated drop out youth for nearly 30 years, and was suspected of serious offenses in their treatment.
The trial has gained wide media coverage throughout New York, and has so far caused damage to the public Orthodox image.
