Attorney of Rabbi Bakshi Doron: "The indictment is a misnomer"
יעקב כהן

Associates of former Chief Rabbi, Rishon Lezion Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi Doron, are officially refusing to comment on the indictment against him for fraud on the 'rabbi's case'.

B'Chadrei Charedim has learned that the former chief rabbi spoke immediately after the arraignment with his associates, and asked them not to talk to the media. One of them said that for now this is the decision. "Anyone who will respond to you is probably not the rabbi's associates, perhaps later the rabbi's request will change, we cannot know."

Attorney Dr. Aviad Hacohen, who represented Rabbi Doron along with attorney Yaakov Weinroth and Yaron Kustlitz at the hearing, said: "We are confident that the truth will come to light and it will become clear that the indictment is a misnomer, and has no factual or legal base.

"It is sad that instead of devoting all its resources to fight bandits and killers, corruption and money laundering, the prosecutors are dedicating so many resources for the Rishon Lezion who his tenure resulted in the reversal phenomenon misconduct of providing fictitious degrees, and that according to the State Attorney's Office has received no personal gain.

"The actions which the prosecution relates to occurred over ten years ago, and the investigation which was opened at the time against the rabbi closed long ago, on the grounds of lack of any guilt. Beyond that, one has to wonder about the new investigation and the indictment after so many years, against a man whose public contribution to the State of Israel is not priceless, especially in light of the rabbi's health."

The indictment filed this morning discusses the involvement of the former Rishon Lezion in the 'rabbi's case', during which false certificates for ordained rabbi for more than 1,000 soldiers and police were issued. Indictment file in the 'rabbi's case', was filed in November 2007 against 10 defendants, and the case is still taking place in court.
