Better late: Natan Sharansky will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah

If you are in Katamon this coming Shabbos, do not miss the fun: Natan Sharansky, former MK and now chairman of the Jewish Agency, is celebrating his bar mitzvah.

Ma'ariv reported that after a delay of more than 50 years Sharansky, 65 decided, to return the celebration deprived from him as a young boy in the former Soviet Union. Recently he decided that it was the appropriate time to celebrate the ceremony and invited all his friends to come to this coming Shabbos to the Yehuda Halevi synagogue and to attend his Bar Mitzvah.

The Bar mitzvah groom will read Parshat Bo and will even carry out a special sermon. Given that the ceremony will take place a few days before the election, we should wait and see whether the excited groom will also combine political statements in his words.

Natan Sharansky was born in Ukraine in תש"ח and was one of the Jewish activists who fought the Soviet government in order to secure their release and grant exit permits. Following the activities he was arrested in the year תשל"ח and spent many years in a labor camp in Siberia. In תשמ"ז he was released and moved to Israel. He served as a Knesset member in the Yisrael B'Aliyah party, which later merged with the Likud, and currently serves as chairman of the World Zionist Organization.

As mentioned this Shabbos he will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah ceremony. And thanks to his parents and the State of Israel who have brought him to this point.
