For the first time since the election of the Chief Rabbinate the opponents shook hands: Hagaon Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef and Hagaon Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar.
The handshake is making waves, especially after the recent storms recorded in Shas movement. It happened tonight (Monday) at the simcha of a Bar Mitzvah of a mutual grandson of the two rabbis, son of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Rosh Yeshiva of Chazon Ovadia.
At the simcha spoken in recent weeks, held in the shadow of the tension between the two sides, which started since the election for the Chief Rabbinate, there was special unity when the "first" shook hands and greeted each other with a warm and affectionate Mazal Tov.
Even between Hgrs"m Amar and Hgr"d Yoseph, member of the Council of Torah Sages there was a handshake, it too was warm, despite the tension between the two men.
The simcha was held in Ramat Rachel in the Talpiot neighborhood and its place was kept a secret, was attended by rabbis and public figures, headed by Hagr"b Shmueli; Hagaon R' Avraham Yosef, Rav of Holon; Hagr"a Abergel Rav of Baka; Hgrb"tz Mutzafi, Hgr"d Yosef member of the Council of Torah Sages; Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, Eli Yishai and billionaire Yitzchak Miralshvili.
Another guest who arrived at the simcha is another candidate for the post of Rishon Lezion - Harav Shmuel Eliyahu Rabbi of Tzfat, who was invited to the personal simcha by Harav Yosef. The two are intimately connected since the election and subsequent meetings of the Chief Rabbinate.
Can we expect a 'Sulha' and straightening things out? Time will tell.
