Jewish Mayor of Kharkov taken for treatment in Israel

The Jewish Mayor of Kharkov was shot yesterday afternoon when he went to ride his bycicle at a park, and was hospitalized in serious condition in hospital in Kharkov, was taken by an undercover operation in the middle of the night to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

Rabbi Moshe Moskowitz, the chief Chabad emissary in Kharkov and a good friend of the mayor, said that with the initiative of the family and the number of Jewish oligarchs - close friends of the mayor, it was decided to fly from Israel Prof. Barak from the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, to decide whether to transfer the mayor for medical care in Israel.

Gennady Moshe Karnes, the Jewish mayor, was severely hurt in his lungs, stomach, liver and spine, and the doctors are fighting for his life.

The working assumption was that Israeli doctors, especially at Rambam Hospital, have more experience in shooting injuries than doctors in Russia. Following complicated surgery which the mayor underwent, at midnight Prof. Barak arrived in Kharkov hospital where he examined the condition of the city mayor, and decided to transfer him by airborne ambulance to under the supervision of Prof. Barak to Rambam Hospital in Israel.

At 3 am the mayor and a team of doctors and family members left the airport in Ukraine on a private plane provided to them by one of the oligarchs. The flight landed in Israel in the morning and an ambulance waiting at the airport moved the mayor to Elisha Hospital in Haifa.

Meanwhile, the assassination investigation continues and so far it seems that the mayor was shot by a "skilled person" equipped with an accurate weapon. An unexploded grenade was also found in the area.

The Elisha Hospital management said that the Jewish mayor of Kharkov, Ganadi Karnes, was transferred to the hospital during the night. "With his reception, he passed diagnostic tests which show that the operations were successful. He is under the care of the best doctors and it seems that further surgical intervention will not be necessary. A few days later it will be decided on a follow up. The hospital shall not provide additional notice for reasons of medical confidentiality and patient privacy in the coming week."
