European representatives: shocked at level of anti-Semitism

"Hard to believe", this was the reaction of ambassadors and representatives of 23 countries from Europe exposed the results of the large survey conducted by the Anti-Defamation League, and published this week, with troubling data about the level of anti-Semitism and the violation of freedom of religion in Europe.

Ambassadors and representatives of the countries were exposed to the survey results at their meeting in Brussels last week with leaders of the Association of Jewish Organizations (EJA) in the European Union.

The meeting was attended and addressed by Hagaon Rabbi Binyamin Jacobs Chief Rabbi of Holland, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, CEO Association of Jewish Organizations in the European Union and RCE, Dr. Shimon Samuels from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Joel Rubinfeld of the Belgian organization for Combating Anti-Semitism and Mark Gadner of the organization of securing Jewish communities in England.

The meeting was attended by ambassadors and representatives of the countries: Estonia, Austria, Ukraine, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia, Poland, Portugal, Finland, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Romania and Sweden.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin said the purpose of the meeting is not blaming the governments of Europe, but calling an emergency conference designed to provide a warning in various governments and emphasize the importance of dealing with the subject, in each state.

The ambassadors agreed that one must formulate a plan to address the issue.

Speaking, Rabbi Margolin asked the ambassadors to ask their governments to establish in each country an office with authority to treat the subject of anti-Semitism under the supervision of the Prime Minister or President. "Only a Ministry which has broad authority can address the issue of anti-Semitism from the perspective of protecting Jewish communities, educating the new generation against anti- Semitism, organizing activities which will show the population the largest contribution European Jews to culture and economy of Europe and other countries," said Rabbi Margolin.
