Huge traffic jams in the town of Lakewood for "Shuttle protest" in Haredi educational institutions.
When eight thousand children enroll in school Lakewood Haredim will have to begin next year to fund their own transportation to school, Lakewood City Hall recently announced.
An umbrella organization of Orthodox educational institutions Lakewood decided to open a series of protests against budget cut and told to shut down busing for two days.
Due to downtime hundreds of parents had to drive their children to school, creating huge traffic jams in the morning.
Yechiel Perkovic Lakewood resident who has five children in local educational institutions says to Behadrey Haredim: "This is an unparalleled scandal, here we pay property taxes and taxes among the highest of cities in New Jersey, and municipal taxes are supposed to fund the ultra-Orthodox community which is more than fifty percent of city residents .
"Cutback means that we as parents will have to bring the children to school, since it is impossible that young children will go by themselves to school. Problem is that schools do not start until nine causing problems with jobs."
Union institutions in Lakewood, in consultation with the city's rabbis said that today and tomorrow parents will assist their children to school when the yellow city buses will travel without students.
"The goal is", say the activists, "to demonstrate how a morning in Lakewood will look like without urban transportation, the city will be jammed and even ambulances have difficulty moving."
Due to the organized strike haredi employers have announced that they allow their employees to be late, so too the largest yeshiva of Lakewood will begin only at 12 noon.
