'Knockout' in Queens: Two youngsters attacked with blows

Two Haredi children, one of them the day before his Bar Mitzvah, who returned on Saturday night from a shull in Far Rockaway, Queens, were attacked by three Gentile youths.

The incident occurred when the two reached 12 Beach Street - close to their home, they were attacked from behind by three non-Jewish boys who apparently followed them. The three beat the children with their fists all over their bodies until they fell to the ground. Immediately after attack, the attackers fled the scene.

Eyewitness called Hatzalah and Hashomrim organizations, who alerted the police. While Hatzala volunteers gave medical assistance to the injured boys, Hashomrim volunteers began chasing the attackers.

Shalom Klein, Hashomrim volunteer, says: "We arrived immediately to the incident which occurred at around 9:45 on Saturday night, we started in pursuit of the youngsters after and eye witness told us which direction they fled, and actually captured them two blocks from the scene".

The police arrested the three men for questioning. The eldest, 17, was arrested and two others were released with a warning.

City Councilman Donovan Richards praised Hashomrim volunteers: "We will not tolerate any assaults on anyone. People should know that when they walk the streets in our neighborhood – they are safe." Even Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder noted that this is an unusual and unacceptable case in Far Rockaway, known as a safe area for walking by day and night, "We're going to do everything in order that such things do not repeat themselves," he said.
