Manchester: Jewish cemetery gravestones were desecrated

Disbelief in Manchester: Vandals entered the local Jewish cemetery and desecrated tombstones.

The incident occurred earlier this week apparently at the Jewish cemetery in Blakely. About 70 gravestones were smashed and broken sometime between Sunday and Monday afternoon.

Smashing gravestones added to another anti-Semitic incident occurred a week ago in the cemetery; tombstones were spray-painted graffiti and swastikas.

Local police chief, Tom Lloyd, condemned the act and called it "sickening". According to him, Manchester Police has defined the nationalist event case and promised to reinforce security patrols in the Jewish cemetery in order to prevent similar incidents.

"Desecration of tombstones is a sickening act and defies all human values they grew up upon; it is the ultimate act of hate and dishonor of the dead. We all come together with the Jewish community and express our anger and solidarity with the Jewish community. Such a kind of crime cannot pass without punishment," said the commander. He added: "We work together with law enforcement authorities to find whoever did this and punish him." Finally, the commander called for anyone with information on the subject – to bring it to the authorities, and as promised to increase security in place.
