The $36,000 Aliyah

There was fierce bidding over the third aliyah in Mezibuz this Yom tov. More than 800 Jews spent Shabbos and Shavuos in the Ukrainian village of Mezibuz, near the tziyun of the Baal Shem tov who's Yarhzeit falls out on Shavuos.

The $36,000 Aliyah

The bidding for the third aliyah began innocently enough with an opening bid of $100. The bidding soon became a passionate competition between Mr. Eduardo Elsztain, owner and chairman of the IBD Group as well as chairman of IRSA, Argentina's largest real estate company, and the 28 year old native Monsey philanthropist, Ezra Unger who currently resides in Yerushalayim.

The price of the aliyah rose steeply in a matter of minutes. The tension increased when Mr. Elsztain upped his bid to $30,000. But Ezra Unger was not willing to back down and place a $36,000 bid of his own. At that point Mr. Elsztain conceded defeat. He graciously got up and went to wish Ezra Unger a hearty mazal tov upon the purchase of the very expensive aliyah, at which point a number of chassidim present broke out in song and dance.
