MK's from Shas and UTJ presented a suggested law to a meeting of ministers, requesting that they exempt Yeshivos from property taxes.

The government approved the new suggestion yesterday, which will come as a great relief for Batei Medresh and Yeshivos. Until now only Batei Knessiyot were exempt from property taxes.

According to a report on Kol B'ramah radio the new law will exempt Batei Medresh and Yeshivos from property taxes as long as they are not running a business on their premises, and the building is being used for Torah learning or prayer.

The bill encountered opposition from the minister of Jerusalem affairs who was concerned that the new bill would bankrupt the Jerusalem municipality.

In response to his concern Aryeh Deri proposed that his office, the ministry of the interior should fit the bill of the city's lost revenues. After Deri's proposal the bill was advanced.
