Floodwaters in West Virginia swept away cars and left thousands without power and hundreds more in a shopping center when 10 inches of rain fell in just 24 hours.

President Barak Obama called the West Virginia Governor and said that the federal government would help the state. 44 of West Virginia's 55 counties are under a state of emergency, and a federal disaster declaration was approved for 3 counties.

The Ranielle cried as she surveyed the town of Greenbrier, "I weep for my people, I weep for the businesses", Mayor Andrea Pendleton said.

Weather.com quoted Greenbrier County Sheriff saying, "Multiple sections of highway just missing. Pavement just peeled off like a banana. I've never seen anything like that."

A White House statement said, "The President extended condolences on behalf of the entire country for the lives lost as result of the severe storms and flooding in West Virginia."
