Those words came into common language long after the Jews of Eastern Europe and the garment workers of the Lower East Side that chose learned speech for writers. Although the Holocaust and assimilation have narrowed Yiddish usage, Yiddish yet needs up-to-date terms.

The first full-fledged English-to-Yiddish dictionary has been published in 50 years.

“Email”? How is “blitspost” — a combination of the Yiddish words for “lightning” and “mail”? and “Designated driver”? “Der nikhterer shofer”

The 826-page Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary, with almost 50,000 entries and 33,000 subentries, by Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath, a and Paul Glasser. Published in June by Indiana University Press with a copyright owned by the League for Yiddish.
