Chareidi Representatives Place veto: ‘Shabbos Bill’ removed From ‘Ministerial Committee On Legislation’

The ‘Ministerial committee on legislation’ refrained from voting on the Shabbos bill this morning, after Chareidi representatives in the Knesset vetoed the bill. Minister of Interior Aryeh Deri joined the cause from his shiva chair: “They want transportation on Shabbos, open stores, they are crazy”

The Shabbos law introduced by MK Miki Zohar(Likud) was to be discussed and voted on by the ‘ministerial committee on legislation’ today. The law was scratched from the committee’s table and was postponed by a month, after it was vetoed by the Chareidi representatives at the committee, this morning.

“Bechadrei Chareidim” discovered that Minister of Interior Aryeh Deri, who is currently sitting shivah for his mother A”H, also enlisted from his shiva chair to create a joint effort to ensure that the bill would not be voted on today.

“Today the ministerial committee is set to convey over the Shabbos law suggested by Zohar, not only do we object, but we are also vetoing it, that it shouldn’t be approved”. Remarked minister Deri to health Minister Yackov Litzman who came to be Menachem-ovel this morning.

Deri also shared with Litzman that he spoke with chairman of the ‘ministerial committee on legislation’, minister Yariv Levine this morning, and he promised him that the bill will not be approved. “They want transportation on Shabbos, to open stores on Shabbos, crazy” Deri Summarized.

As previously reported, last year “Bechadrei Chareidim” exposed that despite the Chareidi opposition to the ‘Zohar’ Shabbos law that will blatantly breach the longstanding status-quoe; and after assuring the Chareidi MK’s that he plans on withdrawing the bill- MK Miki Zohar sponsored his contested shabbos bill. The bill is also co-sponsored by MK Rachel Azaryah, MK Elazar Stern and MK Emanuel Trachtenberg.

The main points in Zohar’s bill are: opening cultural and entertainment centers on Shabbos, reducing business in the supermarkets, while still maintaining accessibility for the residents. As well, limited public transportation would operate from the residential neighborhoods to the cultural and entertainment centers.
