It has been over three months since the buzz over the destruction of the former town of Amona. After its 42 families, comprising over 200 children, were forcefully expelled from their homes and their houses razed to the ground, PM Netanyahu and other elected official promised that a new town would be built for the expellees; a move unprecedented in over 20 years.

Despite all the promises, the families are still living in a few dozen dorm-rooms, in a school dormitory in the town of Ofra. Former residents of Amona say they have lost hope in any real solution coming from the government; which has spurred them into contemplating taking matters into their own hands.

Avichai Boaron who is leading the Amona struggle said, “The prime minister who sent us to build this town in 1996, said it would only take another 4 months. The attorney general said it would only take another 6 months, and we think that no one really knows what’s happening here”.

Speaking to ‘Kol Barama’ radio this morning, a former resident of Amona said, “At the end of this week we will decide if to take matters into our own hands. If to go out there and establish the town on our own. We are not trying to threaten anyone, rather, we are desperate. Living in a dormitory without normal living quarters affects every aspect of our life”.

If initiated by themselves, it’s doubtful if whether the government would allow them to remain there for an extended period of time. Regardless, such a move will definitely bring the desired attention and focus needed to get the political and bureaucratic process moving in favor of the residents.

As was previously reported, the government allocated an area of land near the existing town of Shilo, on which a new town will be built for the former residents of Amona.

Unfortunately, work hasn’t begun on the new town yet, and the residents are still living in the Ofra dormitory.
