In a symbolic cabinet meeting held at the Kosel tunnels this morning, the government approved the ‘Kosel Elevator’ project. The approval came after 13 years of talks and deliberations, into the long-sought improvement at the Kosel. The project has already received all the necessary approvals and permits, and will be implemented immediately.

As part of the project, a special elevator and underground walkway will be built to allow easier access to the Kosel, for people with disabilities.

The cost of the project is estimated at 50 million nis, and the bulk of it was put together by the Ministries of ‘construction and housing’ and ‘Tourism’.

The reason for this large investment is primarily due to the deep historical significance of the Kosel and the Jewish quarter, and the need to make these important places more accessible to the general public; especially for people with disabilities who have a hard time reaching the area. The project is also expected to boost the already booming tourist industry in the old city.

According to the plans, the entrance to the elevator will be on Misgav Ladach street, and the tunnel will descend 26 meters to the level of the Kosel. In addition, a 65-meter tunnel for

pedestrians will be dug at the exit of the elevator, and will lead to the security booth at the Kosel entrance.

As part of the project, an entrance floor of 1,023 sq. meters will be built near the Kosel. For the time being the floor will serve as a public area housing public bathrooms, passages to nearby areas, and stores built on 158 sq. meters.

With the completion of the underground train to the Kosel, the floor will serve as the station and will also have escalators leading out of the station. At a later stage, a second floor will be constructed and will serve as a center for various activities, including conference halls.

The project is being implemented by the ministry of ‘housing and construction’ in conjunction with the ‘company for the reconstruction and development of the Jewish quarter’.
