Knesset To Hold Hearing Over Police Brutality In Meah Shearim

The Knesset committee for ‘constitutional law and justice’ will be holding a hearing over last Friday’s horrendous police brutality in the Mea Shearim neighborhood in Yerushalayim.

The hearing was requested by MK Tamar Zondberg and was suported by MK Betzalel Smotrich. “The scenes which emerged from the demonstration are shocking and require immediate Knesset intervention, the police violence must stop” said Zondberg, referring to last Friday’s police brutality in Meah Shearim.

MK Zondberg also voiced the general concern of a growing police brutality towards minority groups. “This is an example of a specific case of violence directed against minorities and other groups; as we have recently seen in demonstrations in Petach Tikvah, and like past demonstrations by the Ethiopian community”.

Zondberg also pointed out that a “democratic society is measured, among other things, by its ability to tolerate protests and disagreements. Police violence has to be uprooted from the source”, she concluded.

The police brutality last Friday against protesters, minors, women, and journalists alike, has been harshly condemned by many politicians and is now heading for an official hearing at the Knesset.

The exact date of the hearing will be decided in the coming days, and all the relevant parties will be invited, including, representatives from the police, the ‘department of police investigation’, social and human rights activists, and representatives from the demonstration.
