The much sought out weekly Motzei Shabbos EL AL flight, was forced to return to Israel and make an unexpected landing. The incident happened 2-hours into the flight when ben Gurion airport employees discovered tire parts on the runway. The parts were immediately identified as belonging to flight Ly 027 which took off at 1:10 AM Israel time, and was over Turkey at the time of the discovery.

The pilot was immediately told to return home so that the problem could be dealt with at the home base, instead of at a foreign airport.

When the call to return was dispatched the plane was already over the skies of Turkey.
The pilot made a U-turn and returned to Israel landing close to 4 hours after taking off. During the entire incident, the pilot did not report an emergency, and successfully landed the plane in Ben Gurion international airport at 5:00 Am.
On board the flight were dozens of American families who had come to Israel for Shvuoas, and many Israeli tourists heading to New York. The famous Mashpiah R’ Nachman Biderman, together with his relative R’ Meir Broyn were also on board the flight.

The aircraft was repaired and took off just 7 hours later at 10:00 Am.
