Head Of SHABAK: “2000 Potential Terrorists Were Identified Since The Beginning Of 2016”

“Just as in the tangible world we are not satisfied with passive defense, rather we pursue the terrorists wherever they are- so too in the cyber sphere. We study the behavior pattern of our opponent, and we know how to strike him with surprise; with various ways and methods.
Hackers from around the world that operate to harm Israel experience unexpected difficulties from time to time”, says head of the GSS, Nadav Argaman.
The remarks were made this morning (Tuesday), at a rare public appearance by the head of the GSS, as part of the ‘national cyber week’ being held at the Hebrew university in Tel Aviv.

The head of the GSS added, “In the past year the SHABAK, together with its partners in the international intelligence community and cyber defenses (organizations), have dealt with many challenges in the field; from powerful (government) threats, to threats from terror organization, and even threats from hackers acting on their own.
In order to thwart these threats, we have implemented dozens of sophisticated and successful operations. And still, given the deceptive characteristic of cyberspace, we should remain modest and cautious about our ability to obtain a hermetic picture of what is happening in this space”.

Argaman explained that in the cyber world ‘integration’ is the name of the game.
“We are operating against our opponents through a cyber coalition which includes the IDF, Mossad, Cyber authority, the defense ministry and others”.
Aside from the Israeli defense and cyber organizations working together, Argaman also pointed out the strategic alliance which Israel maintains with other cyber intelligence organizations from around the world.
“The SHABAK maintains working relations with colleagues from intelligence organizations from around the world, and is ready to assist with the knowledge and experience accumulated to deal with terror threats which the western world is dealing with”.
Argaman shared with the audience that with the use of, “quality intelligence” B’’H many terror attacks were thwarted.
“To successfully identify a lone attacker is a tremendous challenge. Despite the complexity involved, the SHABAK together with its partners succeeded to…from the beginning of 2016 to identify more than 2000 potential lone terrorists”.
