Rabbis of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City are protesting against the construction of a special tent and placing a Christmas tree at the Jaffa Gate, on the connecting route of the new city to Jerusalem's Old City.

Council member, Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchaki from Shas, also protested the placement of the Christmas tree and told Channel 7 that "this is a serious violation to the nation of Israel, this is a desecration, a grave offense, and it is unthinkable that a Christmas tree will be placed here in a public place on the way to the Western Wall.

He also added that a demand was sent to the mayor to remove the tree. "Jews on their way to the Western Wall pass there. I hear the voices of protest."

According to the plan it is expected on Sunday - the Fast of the Tenth of Tevet - a prayer and protest at the site.

The Jerusalem Municipality said that "the city is working for the welfare of all sectors in the city while providing the freedom of religion."
