Belgian authorities have announced today (Wednesday) that 31 people were arrested in three different countries, on suspicion of involvement in the largest diamond robbery that took place two months ago at Brussels Airport.
Undercover operation involving 250 police officers one man in France was arrested, six in Switzerland and 24 in Belgium, it was coordinated police operation to capture those involved.
In addition, it was reported that money and diamonds related to the robbery were confiscated in the raid - money in Belgium and diamonds in Switzerland. There was no elaboration to the value of the confiscated property.
Recall, on April 19, armed robbers with automatic laser sensors - stole shipped diamonds in the evening from a Brinks truck that was on the Brussels airport route, in an especially fast robbery which lasted three minutes.
The gang robbed a Brinks truck, containing diamonds and jewelry, loaded the cargo on the flight to Zurich, whilst using two cars: one broke the security barrier, and second – which they turned into a police mobile - escaped.
"Diamond value is $ 50 million," said Carolyn Wolf, from the Antwerp diamond center. "This is a huge amount," she concluded.
Prosecution admitted at the time that the thieves were professionals. They dressed as policemen, wearing masks on their faces and were well armed. She said the robbery lasted 11 minutes with no shots and no injuries, and soon after left through the hole in the fence from which the thieves entered.
Antwerp diamond community said that the fact is that the diamond owners received from insurance the full amount of diamonds, who was in her pocket hit by the theft was the insurance company. But Antwerp diamond dealers are following the developments with great interest.
