Outrage in the Jewish community in Krakow, Poland: the ancient Beis Midrash located in the old Jewish Quarter, was leased by the community for five years but then it found out that it was designated for a dancing club.

A few weeks ago heads of the Jewish community signed a rental agreement for five years. Just a few days later they discovered that the building erected in 1986, will quickly become a spot for local young people.

This was discovered after a few days ago ads were hung around the town, inviting to "the grand opening of the new club". The ads reads: "On Saturday night at 20:00 pm we will open the club and celebrate until dawn. Different DJ's will play electronic music, rock and even hard rock and techno. Exactly as mescal, the Mexican alcoholic drink, is controversial and penetrates your senses, so we'll surprise and penetrate your senses."

According to the report this morning in the newspaper Ma'ariv, members of the Jewish community in Krakow were furious at the decision to make the historic site into a disco. Jonathan Orenstein, director of the Jewish Center in the city, said, "We did not know anything. It's a shame that such a decision is taken secretly and published just two weeks after a big conference on ancient Jewish property protection in Poland took place right here."

Employees at the place said last night: "Now that they tell us that the structure is a shul, it feels awkward to work here."

President of the Jewish community, Tadeusz Jakubowicz, 'said to the Polish newspaper "Gazeta Wyborcza" that the reason for rental of the synagogue stems from the precarious financial situation of the community, which finds it difficult to meet maintenance costs, "The people who rented the place are serious and we believe they will manage this club with respect. If there are still problems, we will end the contract with them."
