German newspaper published a cartoon with anti-Semitic motifs - and the Jewish community in Germany cried: the paper, which is considered one of the most widespread in the country, published yesterday (Tuesday) a figure in which Israel is portrayed as a hungry monster that feeds on German weapons - with the caption: "Germany serves. Israel was given weapons for decades, in some cases for free. Israel's enemies think it is a starving idol." The report is brought by a Ha'aretz.

The cartoon was published as an illustration accompanied by criticism of the books that deal with Israel, including a book by the Jewish journalist - American Peter Beinart, who is considered a sharp critic of the Israeli government and Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Senior Jewish leaders in Germany were quick to attack the paper. Head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Dr. Peter Graumann, said the cartoon was "almost at the level of Der Strummer."

Following the criticism, the paper published a statement on its website. The post title was "Is a hungry monster anti-Semitism?" and it was claimed that despite the fact that "there is no connection to anti-Semitism, the painting caused a misunderstanding and it would have been better to choose another one."

This is not the first case where the newspaper is perceived as anti-Semitic. Last year, it published an anti-Israel song by a German poet, Gunter Grass, and then also aroused widespread public criticism.
