Rabbi Lazar, Chief Rabbi of Russia, was forced to walk home on Friday night many miles on foot after landing at the airport in Moscow 10 minutes before Shabbos.
On Friday, a ceremony was held near the city of Belgorod, marking the 70th anniversary of the decisive battle during WWII of the Russian Army against the Nazis.
The event was attended by President Vladimir Putin and government officials.
Rabbi Lazar also invited to the event by the Office of the President. The Rabbi expressed concern regarding desecration of Shabbos, and was assured that the plane would take him home immediately after the ceremony, so that he would land two hours before Shabbos.
The event was celebrated, and the rabbi quickly left for the departing flight. But it turned out that due to landing of fighter jets circling above, the flight was delayed.
The Rabbi asked to get off and stay in the city, but it was impossible, since the plane was on the runway. However the pilot promised that he will land in Moscow about ten minutes before Shabbos, at 10 at night.
Indeed the plane landed a few minutes before Shabbos. The Rabbi managed to inform his family that he had landed safely, and began to walk by foot toward his home, accompanied by his bodyguards.
Ministers who knew the rabbi, saw him walking along the road and offered him to enter their car but he refused. "No one will notice," they said, "we'll do it fast", but he refused with a smile and kept walking, while praying and singing Shabbos songs.
The Rabbi walked thirty kilometers, and only at 6 am he arrived home, made Kiddush and tasted something between Birkos Hashachar and Shachris. The continuation of the prayer he made in shull, and even gave a drosha worshipers as if he did not march all night the whole long way.
