Jewish organizations against the Chief Rabbi of Poland: "Resign"

Ban of Jewish slaughter in Poland continues to stir the Jewish communities in Europe: a few days after the ban went into effect, a number of Jewish organizations harshly criticize the conduct of Rabbi Michael Shudrich, the Chief Rabbi of Poland, on the slaughter - news agency JTA Global Jewish reported.

According to the representative on the eve of the fateful vote in Parliament, "Rabbi Shudrich told us that everything was under control until we found out it was not so then it was too late to take action."

Another representative, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, who is CEO of the Association of Jewish organizations in the European Union (EJA), also called Shudrich to leave his post following the failure. "Shudrich blocked Jewish organizations which worked to save the slaughter in Poland, out of considerations of ego, so he will be the only one to deal with the issue. I strongly condemn the conduct of Rabbi Shudrich and call him to resign, "said Margolin to the news agency.

In response Shudrich claims that behind Margolin's words is "hatred". He said he "was in contact" with the slaughter issue with the European Jewish Congress and the Conference of European Rabbis. Shudrich, who spoke with the agency on Tisha B'Av, added: "Today, we bring up the memory of the Temple which was destroyed because of baseless hatred. It is painful to see that there are those who have learned nothing from the past."

However, other representatives of two European Jewish organizations agreed to talk to the News Agency off the record also criticized Shudrich who prevented outside assistance in connection with a vote in parliament on slaughter.

The article also argued against Shudrich that four months ago, when he learned that a delegation of rabbis are going to meet with President of Poland, to discuss, among other things, about the slaughter, he fought against the initiative and led to the cancellation of the meeting a few days before its existence, to the puzzlement of everyone involved.

It should be noted further that Shudrich is considered a controversial figure in some parts of the Haredi community.

At the same time, another Jewish organization representative who spoke with the News Agency actually defended Shudrich and said that "it would be wrong to attribute the failure of this to Shudrich. Strategy failed because of internal Polish political problems," he says. "The great majority which rejected the law proves that this was a serious issue beyond the control of Shudrich."

As mentioned last Friday, the Polish Parliament held the voting to a law designed to regulate the existence of slaughter in Poland. The law was rejected by a majority of 22 against 178 supporters. In response to the cancellation of the law, said yesterday Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk that he has no plans to introduce a new law that will save the slaughter.
