After the statement of the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Task, that he will not act to present a new law regulating the shchita, a solution to the problem which stirs Jews in Europe, as well as the Polish public opinion, is now emerging.

Polish ambassador to the EU, Mark Pravda, announced to Rabbi Menachem Margolin, who is CEO of the Association of Jewish organizations in the European Union (EJA), that Prime Minister Task acceded to his request and ordered the establishment of a special commission to find a solution to the problem of kosher slaughter in Poland.

The government committee will be headed by Polish Administration Minister Michael Bonnie, also in charge of religious affairs in Poland. The Ambassador noted that the Minister asked that Rabbi Margolin will escort the work of the committee.

Rabbi Margolin accepted the invitation, and said that in light of the determination with which the Polish government works to solve the serious problem, he has no doubt that as he believed in the first place, there are no anti-Semitic motives, G-d forbid, but a combination of political circumstances and the lack of knowledge regarding the nature of Jewish slaughter.

The conversation between Ambassador Pravda and Rabbi Margolin is the result of vigorous activity of the Association of Jewish organizations with government leaders in Poland as well as with Polishe representatives in the European Parliament - and following meetings held by Margolin and other rabbis who are members of the Rabbinical Centre of Europe in recent days with the ambassadors of Poland in many EU countries.

Ambassador Pravda further updated Rabbi Margolin, that the Polish government instructed legal advisors to examine the legal issues raised in the talks, that legislation prohibiting the continuation of kosher slaughter in Poland is contrary to the state constitution to determine which prohibits violation of freedom of religion and worship of the minorities in Poland.

Within days, the ambassador explained to Rabbi Margolin, legal opinions will be received and the ban on shchita may be canceled for this reason.
