Huge theft in broad daylight: anonymous armed thief this morning (Sunday) entered a hotel in Cannes on the French Riviera and stole diamonds valued at nearly 40 million Euros (53 million dollars).

Authorities in southern France announced that the diamonds were stolen from an exhibition displayed at the hotel, Carlton city. Cannes local site reported that the collection which was stolen belonged to an Israeli businessman R. Lev Leviev.

An initial police investigation revealed that the robber escaped with a diamond briefcase.

The hotel refused to respond to police publication about the robbery. The police are hunting the bandit.

Yesterday it was reported that Leviev appears in seventh place in the list of top ten world's richest diamond merchants, according to Wealth-X Company. Fortune estimated at $ 1.4 billion. Leviev is chairman of Africa Israel Group which is involved in trading and mining of diamonds in Russia and Africa.
